How much does a driving school cost?
The price of a driving school depends mainly on two things: your prior knowledge and the courses you want to take. The price can vary from one traffic school to another, and there are several factors that can ultimately affect the price.
Average prices for the different driving license classes:
- Moped license: price from approx. NOK 10000,-
- Light motorcycle license: price from approx. Nok 19.000,
- Medium motorcycle license: price from approx. NOK 21.500
- Heavy motorcycle license: price from approx. NOK 23.500,-
- Car license: price from approx. NOK 30.000,-
- Light truck license: price from approx. NOK 22.500,-
- Truck license: price from approx. NOK 38.000,-
- Minibus license: price from approx. NOK 19.000,-
- Bus license: price from approx. NOK 40.000,-
- Tractor license: price from approx. NOK 12.500,-
- Snowmobile license: price from approx. NOK 11.000,-
These price examples are based on the required mandatory training and the average number of driving hours for the different license classes. Many people will end up paying more or less than this.

What affects the price of a driving school?
Beyond the price differences that different driving schools may have on their courses, there are three main elements that can affect the price quite significantly.
Package prices
For most driving license classes, you can choose to book the different courses individually or as a package.
There are also different packages to suit different needs.
Typical package deals:
- Basic traffic course: Includes basic traffic course, first aid and night driving.
- Driving hours: Contains X number of driving hours.
- Compulsory training: Contains all mandatory training for the given driving license class.
- Complete package: Contains basic driving course, driving lessons, compulsory training, car rental for the driving test.
If you book the training in one of the different package deals, it is possible to save thousands of kroner. It is common to save somewhere between about 10%-30% by booking a complete package deal, compared to booking each course and driving lesson individually.
Driving lessons
Driving lessons are often the biggest contributor to price differences.
The number of driving lessons needed is tailored to the individual, as all students have different prior knowledge, different learning curves, and not everyone can practice driving privately.
In general, driving lessons are not compulsory, but it is rare to be advised to book a driving test without having completed a minimum number of driving lessons in advance.
Price examples for driving lessons:
- 5 driving lessons of 45 minutes each: NOK 3.750, –
- 10 driving lessons of 45 minutes each: NOK 7.500,-
- 20 driving lessons of 45 minutes each: NOK 15.000,-
- 30 driving lessons of 45 minutes each: NOK 22.500,-
The average cost of a class B license is about NOK 30 000. However, if you do not have the opportunity to practice driving privately and may need up to 40 driving hours, the total cost of the license could easily double.
To keep costs at a moderate level, you should therefore practice driving as much as possible.
Driving test
It can be tempting to book the first available driving test after you have finished your compulsory training. If your driving instructor doesn’t think you’re ready, consider listening to them and take a few more driving lessons first.
Failing the practical driving test can be demotivating, while also increasing overall costs.
Price example for the driving test
A driving test for a driving license usually costs between NOK 3.500, – and NOK 4.500. -. This includes renting a car for the driving test and a fee to the State Road Administration. If it turns out that you must take the driving test 2-3 times before you pass, this is likely to make the total cost of the license well above the average.
5 things to consider before choosing a driving school:
- Which driving license class do you need?
- What are your needs, what is important to you?
- How much time do you want to spend? Some driving school offer intensive courses for faster training.
- Set a budget for how much you can spend and get a good idea of the costs.
- Remember to check carefully what is included in the different packages.
Which driving school is the best?
Which driving school that is best for you depends on your wishes, needs and preferences. The driving school that is best for you is not necessarily the same traffic school that is best for your friend.
In each area, there are a certain number of driving schools, where the driving schools may have several driving instructors, with different instructors having different experience and competences.
To find out which driving school is best for you, the first thing we need to know is what license class you want to drive in and whether you have any specific preferences.
Some students want to use the driving school with the best references and feedback from former students. For some, it is important that the driving school offers pick-up and drop-off for driving lessons. For others, price is more important.
Based on the information we receive from you; we will put you in touch with the traffic school in your area that best matches your needs.

How does driving training work in driving schools?
Regardless of which class of driving license you have, your training will follow the same 4-step model. This is a driver training model introduced in Norway in 2005 to ensure that future drivers are well equipped to drive independently.
These are the four steps you need to go through to get a driving license in Norway:
Step 1: Basic traffic course
This stage is common and compulsory for all applicants for a driving license, regardless of their license category, and consists of 17 hours of basic training. You can take the course from the age of 15. If you are over 25, only night driving and first aid are compulsory.
After completing and passing the basic traffic course, you are entitled to practice driving from the age of 16. If you have already completed and passed the basic traffic course, you are already ready to move on to stage two.
Step 2: Basic training
The basic training is designed to enable you as a learner to master the vehicle in question in terms of driving techniques, and to acquire knowledge about driver responsibility and safe driving. After completing a guidance lesson with a driving instructor, and if you feel you are good enough, you are ready to move on to the next stage.
Step 3: Proficiency in traffic
At this stage, the learner should be able to drive in varied traffic and become a more independent driver. There are usually some compulsory courses that must be completed. The courses that need to be completed vary between the different license classes.
Once you have completed a guidance lesson with a driving instructor and you feel you are good enough, you are ready to move on to the next stage.
Step 4: Final training
The final stage is about ensuring that you as a learner are skilled enough to drive in a sensible and responsible manner, where you should be able to show a good understanding of risk and interact well with others in traffic. For many of the driving license classes, there will also be some compulsory courses that must be completed.
If you and your driving instructor feel that you are safe enough for the driving test, you will soon be ready to start driving. It is important that you apply for a driving license before applying for a test date. Be prepared for the fact that there may often be a queue and many people taking the test at the same time as you.

Intensive driving license course
For most driving license classes, it is common to take 1-3 months to complete the training. Training is normally carried out by spreading the compulsory courses evenly over a period of time, with driving lessons and private practice driving in the intervening periods.
An intensive course normally contains the same training, but in a much shorter period of time, which means that intensive courses are ideal for those who need or want to get their license quickly.
An intensive course normally lasts 1-3 weeks, depending on the category of driving license. During this time, you will complete all the compulsory training, and often a certain number of driving lessons, so that you have covered everything necessary for the driving test.
It is often a prerequisite that you have already completed a basic driving course and that you have done some private practice driving, so that the basic knowledge and skills are already in place. There are also some driving schools that can adapt the training to your needs, even if you have not done much practice driving beforehand.
An intensive course doesn’t have to cost more than the traditional training course – it can be cheaper. This depends on the driving school’s prices and your own level of skill and knowledge.

How do you get a driving license?
To obtain a driving license, you must complete the necessary compulsory training at a driving school, pass a theory test, and a driving test.
Before you can take the theory test, you must apply for a driving license. You can do this on the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s website.
When you apply for a driving license, an automatic check of your criminal record will be carried out, which usually takes 2-4 weeks to complete. If approved, it will be valid for 6 months. Thereafter, a new check will be carried out every 4 months for up to 3 years, until the driving license is issued.
If you have a visual and/or hearing impairment, you must also provide an eye or health certificate obtained from your doctor.
Before you can take a driving test, you must be of good character, have passed the theory test and have submitted any necessary eyesight and health certificates. The driving instructor and the driving school will then usually book a driving lesson for you.
If you pass the test, you can order a driving license on the Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s website or directly through a traffic station, such as the traffic station where you completed the test. The driving license will then be sent to you by post.

Driving test
The driving test is taken at your local traffic station and lasts 65-75 minutes, depending on the license class you are driving in.
The practical driving test is divided into three parts:
Preparing the vehicle
Involves preparing the vehicle and making the necessary adjustments so that the vehicle is suitable for you.Safety check
This is to check that the vehicle is fit for use, and you will be asked to carry out random checks such as checking the brakes.Driving
You are assigned a predetermined driving route, with the sensor providing driving instructions along the way.
All parts of the practical driving test should be solved independently, and the test will be assessed as a whole.
Immediately after the practical driving test you will know whether you have passed or failed.
